P.B.L - Conservation/Litter
We have chosen to do Conservation & Litter. We are travelling to New Brighton Beach, walking the length of it while picking up the rubbish. Litter on the beach is bad because it gets into the oceans. Sea animals see the rubbish as food and eat it, by picking up the rubbish we are creating the less deaths in the ocean. By us doing this we are showing people to keep a clean beach and to care for the environment, if people see us cleaning the beach they might have the heart to keep it clean.
Steps
Steps
- Collect rubbish bags and gloves
- Turn up to bus stop
- Catch right bus
- Arrive at beach
- Get lunch
- Pick up rubbish
- Get home
Math Conclusions

Conclusions
- The regression is positive, meaning the graph has a positive trend.
- The line has a strong strength.
- Most people have a height between 155cm and 175cm
- It has a fairly strong linear
Prediction
- The prediction for the killer is suspected to be 178cm tall.

Forces & Motion
On any object there are four forces, these are; Support, Thrust, Weight and Friction. Forces have the ability to; speed things up, slow things down, change the direction of movement and the ability to change the shape of an object. Forces are measured in Newtons (N), this name is due to Sir Isaac Newton who was the man behind the theory of force and motion.
Measuring The Size Of A Force
When the forces on an object are balance that means the object is stationery, but when the forces are unbalanced the object will be moving in the direction of the force with a greater Newton measurement.
From this picture we can see the truck has a larger thrust than it does friction, this means the truck is moving in a forwards motion. To figure out the nett force of the trucks movement, you simply take the friction force away from the thrust.
100N - 60N = 40N = The truck has a nett force of 40N
Calculating Speed
To calculate the speed of an object simply, divide the distance by the time
A car travels 12 metres in 3 seconds
Speed = Distance/Time
Speed = 12/3
The car traveled at 4 metres per second
Calculating Time
To calculate the time an object has taken to travel somewhere, divide the distance by the speed.
A car travels 36 metres at 2 metres per second
Time = Distance/Speed
Time = 36/2
The car took 18 seconds to travel the 36 metres.
Calculating Distance
To calculate the distance an object has traveled, times the speed and time together.
A car travels for 2 seconds at 12 metres per second
Distance = Time x Speed
Distance = 2 x 12
The car travelled 24m
Properties Of Metals
There are properties that scientists look for to determine whether the piece they are examining are metals or non-metals. All metals are solid at room temperature apart from mercury. Metals are placed on the left side of the periodic table, the right side is where the gases are placed.
Properties
Lustre
Metals have a shiny surface, the lustre is how reflective the metallic surface is.
Malleability
Metals have the factor of malleability, this means that they can be bent, hammered or pressed into a desired shape without breaking or forming cracks.
Electrical Conductivity
The electrons within the metal is powerful enough to conduct electricity.
Ductility
Metals are able to be drawn out into fine wire without breaking to pieces.
Room Temperature State
All metals are solid at room temperature except for mercury which is a liquid.
Thermal Conductivity
Atoms in metals are tightly packed together. Due to the tight package metals are easily able to conduct heat.

Layers Of The Earth
Crust
Mantle
Inner Core
The crust is the outermost and thinnest layer of the earth. It has a thickness of 0-60 km. The crust is made up of three different types of rock; Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic, these hold elements such as; oxygen, silicon, aluminium, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. There are two different types of crust; Continental Crust which carries the land, and Oceanic Crust which carries the worlds oceans.
Mantle
The mantle is the second most outer layer as well as the thickest layer of the earths make up. It has a distance of 2,900 km when measuring from the bottom of the crust to the bottom of the mantle, the mantles temperature varies depending where your measuring, near the top of the mantle it ranges between 500-900 °C, towards the bottom the temperature ranges between 4000-5000 °C. It is composed of molten rock called magma, magma contains mainly magnesium and iron. The immense heat in the bottom of the mantle causes rocks to rise to the top of the mantle, where they then cool and sink back to the bottom. This movement is called a convection current. These currents are what is suspected to be the cause of the movement of tectonic plates.
Outer Core
Outer Core
The outer core acts as a casing for the inner core. It is 2,200 km thick, the outer core is extremely hot with its temperature ranging between 4000-5000 °C. It is a liquid layer made up of molten iron and nickel.
Inner Core
The inner core is the centre of the earth. It is approximately 1,200 km thick, the inner core is the hottest part of the earth with its temperature ranging between 5000-5500 °C. The inner core is composed of solid iron. The inner core spins at a different speed compared to the rest of the earth, this is what is thought to cause the earths magnetic field.
Science Behind Natural Disasters
Earthquakes
Earthquakes are vibrations caused by rocks breaking under stress.
The outer layer of the Earth is called the crust. The crust is broken into different parts called tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving, and continents are attached to the plates which causes them to move as well. The movements are so gentle that we can’t feel them.
An earthquake occurs when two of these plates collide. Minor earthquakes are a result of two plates brushing up against each other. Major earthquakes are created when one plate is forced under another.
Tsunamis
A tsunami is a group of large waves caused by a sudden movement on the ocean floor. A tsunami often follows an earthquake, underwater landslide, volcanic eruption or meteor.
Friction between two tectonic plates causes seismic energy (vibrations), which causes an earthquake to occur. When an undersea earthquake happens it abruptly pushes one of the tectonic plates upwards. This causes an immense displacement of ocean water, causing it to spread out every direction from the centre of the earthquake. As the waves get closer to shore they get compressed into a smaller space causing them to gain height.
Volcanic Eruption
A volcano is a vent that acts as a passage for molten rock to travel from the mantle to the Earths surface, Magma sits in the mantle, as the magma rises through rock gas bubbles form and expand, the build up of pressure causes the magma to break through the main vent and secondary vents of the volcano. Once magma is passed through the cracks it is then called lava. Volcanic eruptions have different extremity's, the level of power depends on the amount of gas. The more gas bubbles the magma has, the more power it exits the earth with.

How We Feelin.
Casi, Shar & Jorja
We have chosen to have a positive impact on people in poverty.
Poverty effects people worldwide, but we are focusing on the people in NZ, particularly Christchurch. It affects children and families as they struggle with everyday needs. It also affects schools as students in poverty don't get food which means they don't get enough energy to function well. The issue of poverty is that it is hard to get out of, people don't want to associate with you so you can't get out of it. It started a long time ago and has gotten worse due to the forever changing economy and the continuous raise of life's prices. To help out we have decided to create Christmas hampers that will help families in poverty at Christmas. Our intention is that families will have a better Christmas.

The English Language Article
On The Surface
- Commerce, Trade, Education, Science, International Relations ad Tourism are areas where English is used for communication.
- It is a major part of global economy.
- Papua New Guinea, Brazil and Australia are trying to preserve their language.
Discovering Techniques
- The definition of “lingua franca” is “A language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native language is different”.
- English is described as an “open source” because it can be adapted and modified depending on what way the language is being used.
- The headline of the article alludes to the TV programme “Life As We Know It”
Search & Think
- Religious Dialects, National Standards with Conventions, Slang, Pronunciation, Mobile Phones, Texting and Emailing.
- The writer is worried about the English rise as it has a major impact on the countries that don’t speak English, it is putting languages at risk of distinction.
Hidden Depths
- The indigenous language in New Zealand is Maori, Maori is being preserved in my opinion it is sometimes being preserved to extreme lengths.
- I do not think we use New Zealand English, I think we use the English that the U.K uses. In schools we are always being told wrong when we use American spellings and are corrected to U.K English.
- The use of computers has affected my spelling. When I make an error on a computer it is underlined in red, within two clicks it is corrected to the right spelling, this does not teach me anything as I don’t take notice of the right spelling. When I need to research something I just type up the answer and it comes up or instead of doing something practical I will just play on my phone, instead of this I could be reading which helps with spelling and extending vocabulary.

Crossing Nile
Have you ever dreaded something so much, you’ve considered to do anything to get out of it? I have. It was a crispy cold day where the clouds were covered in silver pillows casting a storm of despair on my being. We made our way down a chocolate slip n slide, laughing and tumbling as we went. As we reached the root we cast our eyes upon a sky blue river. Our experienced leader explained the task that lay in our future. We were to be a circus act and tightrope across a river, then turn into a zipling arborist coming back to our starting point. My mouth turned into a donut, who did she think I was, Bear Grylls, I thought not.
I plonked myself onto a rock by the river away from the pack. I figured if she didn’t see me I wouldn’t do it. One by one clowns did their circus tricks. I observed the show in a bubble of boredom from my riverfront seat, solo, until a ginger baboon accompanied me. He was then followed by his brunette baboon friend. The pair made me smile and laugh, we skimmed stones across the lake, or at least tried to. The activity was nearing the end of the people, I still did not want to be a funambulist and I learnt that my brunette friend Harry, didn’t either. The only two left to do it were Harry and I. We were thrown our harnesses and helped each other into them, we made sure we had double security. Our leader then shot a curious look to us, “Which one of you is going first?”, we looked at each other and being a good friend Harry offered to go first. He clambered to the top of the staircase and clipped on, away he went, zooming down the wire like a rollercoaster he soon reached the finish, the leader then looked at me, and I knew I had no way out of this. Those steps looked like big gaping holes to hell, I just did not want to do this. My hands were shaking, my knees were trembling and my heart was playing on a pogo stick. I staggered up the steps and clipped on, I triple checked everything to make sure I was not going to fall to my death (a major over exaggeration but this was how anxious I was). I took to the shiny plaited grey wire. I was unable to find balance and realised I wasn’t going to, so I decided to ride the wire like a teeter-totter. Keeping my arms close to my pounding chest I soon learnt that this was causing an unneeded added struggle. My ginger companion started to scream at me, instructing me on how to have my arms, I tried to push them out but that was worse and they came straight back in like a yo-yo. The tabby still found the need to scream at me, I couldn’t deal with it and unleashed my fury and frustration on him like a dog barking at a cat.
Baby steps seemed to be the way and before I knew it I wasn’t above the bank but above the river. I kept going and step by step I inched my way across the wire. It wasn’t going exactly smoothly but it was tolerable until I found myself in the middle of a tornado and that’s when trouble started to stir. I was being blown about like I was pegged on a washing line. I persevered and soon enough made it to the end. I was so proud of myself and felt like I accomplished a lot, then I turned around to see I crossed a skinny little puddle, that's it, that’s all I crossed, it felt like I had crossed the Nile not a piddly stream. I was then reminded I still had to go back, but at least I just had to sit there while being pulled across. Harry plodded his way to the edge where he awaited his circus challenge. Up he went and like me he immediately started complaining, he did well and made his way through tornado valley, but then “Whoosh”, Harry falls off the wire and dangles like an ornament on a christmas tree. He made his way back on and crossed the finish line. Right now it's time for me to join my pack on the other side. I clip on and “Zwoosh Zwoosh Zwoosh”, I am pulled back to safety. I hop down the stairs and rejoin my two pals.
I was very proud of myself for what I had accomplished. Even though it seemed like nothing to others, it was a lot for me. I learnt that things like that are just mind over matter, instead of looking at it as a piece of spaghetti waiting to snap, I should've just seen it for what it was. I used a lot of perseverance and resilience to get through the activity and it was worth it.

Beam
I learnt what a side dismount was. I attempted to do this, I was able to lift myself up and get one leg on the beam but was unable to get up without putting my knees on the beam. I successfully did dip walks, but I need to work on my cat leap, pivot turn and side dismount.
Bar
I found this apparatus difficult. I could hold myself in front support but could not do a back hip circle.
Parallel Bars
I was happy with what I achieved on the bars. I managed to walk myself into the middle and straddle successfully. I then went on to learn and do a forward roll using the mat thanks to Mrs Tafau. I was a little timid at first but then realised I trusted Mrs Tafau and Jess to hold support on the mat, I then did the roll and realised it wasn't hard.

The Loss Of My Life
Have you ever lost someone who you are extremely close to? I have, I’ve lost two incredible people in my life. I used to have the two greatest people with me until one day my world was flipped upside down. It was a breezy spring day and I was sitting outside reading a book my Grandma had given to me and “ring ring” the phone rang, I dashed inside and answered. There was an unknown voice on the other end, her voice was soft and calm but you could tell she was hiding something. She told me that she was sorry repeatedly, I became so bewildered, I requested her to tell me what she felt sorrow for. I dropped the phone, I abandoned the woman. This couldn’t be true, this could not be happening, my worst nightmare had become a reality. The woman was a nurse at Central Districts Hospital and she had told me the most drastically devastating news I had ever heard. Grandma and Grandpa were travelling home from their holiday batch in Kaikoura and that's when tragedy struck, they collided with another vehicle and both died at hospital.
My heart just got pulled out and turned into confetti. I was falling down a tunnel of despair and didn’t know if I was ever going to come out the other end. I needed them, they were my everything, they were the thing that I pushed myself for, they were my rock. I just couldn’t see the Earth without them.
A week later I was still struggling to come to terms with the wicked turn of events. I decided to actually do something about it. My Grandparents used to take me to a lovely sunny place in Mangrove Forest, it was by a glistening lake and surrounded by flowers that were as white as snow. We would take a picnic and just spend amazing hours listening to stories till the sun departed. I went to the garage and grabbed the three chairs we once sat on at their humble abode. The chairs were made from a dusty coloured maple material, they were a picture of love, laughter and wisdom. I took the old souls and packed them into my turquoise ute. I blasted out my Grandpa’s CD and traveled to the beloved spot in Mangrove Forest. Rain clouds immediately formed in my eyes and started to pour. I collected the chairs from the back and scanned the area for somewhere to place the chairs. I glanced over to a cleared spot in front of the trees and beside the lake, it was perfect. I planted the chairs into the earth. I took a step back and admired the picture perfect scene. This was it, this was what I needed to come to terms with the loss of my Grandparents.
My Grandparents had a spectacular life, they left an incredible legacy and now i’ts up to me to carry on that legacy and make them proud.

Taylor Swifts Train Wreck
Taylor Swift released the music video to her newest single "Look What You Made Me Do" during the 2017 VMA's on Sunday Night. The song itself was horrible but with the addition of the music video it was a complete and utter horror show.
The first scene we see is a graveyard resembling the fact that the old Taylor Swift is dead, can't this be real, if only. The next scene is her in a bath tub with a single dollar bill which I guess was symbolising her court case against a DJ who groped her in 2013, Taylor that was in the past move on, because NO ONE cares anymore. This next one I just feel so special about because it showed Taylor Swift actually cared about what I thought of her. She sits a top a throne, sipping tea while being surrounded by snakes. Of course I was going to call you out for you horrid phone call with my husband, I'll stick up for him the whole way. The fact the world finally figured out the true snake you really are was my fault and I am happy they did. Next you move on to dissing Katy Perry, grow the hell up woman you were the one who stole her dancers. Taylor felt like she had to pose as Perry, but she put a little twist on it. Swift decided to hold up a Grammy resembling the fact that she has ten while Perry hasn't got a single one, won't this hag stop bragging about herself. As it is Taylor Swift she had to find some way to ram her dancing cats in there. In the next scene we had Taylor being her unoriginal self where she had to steal two shots from Queen Bey's "Formation" video. I thought that Taylor reached the appitamy of unprofessional at this point in the video.
Taylor Swift tried to prove that her reputation as a goody good is over and for the world to prepare for the new bad girl Taylor Swift. In my opinion Taylor Swift is a fake and a phony and soon enough the world is going to sick of her and shes going to turn into a has been, it's just a matter of time.

Making Salt
Aim:
To make copper sulfate crystals (salt) by neutralising copper oxide (base) with a sulfuric acid (HSO)
Method:
Follow the method on Page 39 of your Scipad book.
Observations: (write an observation for each key stage of the process - full sentences please)
1. I noticed that the acid was too strong for the base as we went through four full bottles of the base and the solution was still a dark red colour when tested with universal indicator
2. I could see the salt forming on the bottom of the petri dish while the water was evaporating
3. The salt was not in a crystal form like I thought it would, it was a powdery substance
Results:
Conclusion: We managed to create some salt by successfully neutralising the acid and base.
Word equation for the reaction:
Hydrochloric Acid + Sodium Hydroxide --- Sodium Chloride + Water
Balanced chemical equation for the reaction:
HCI + NaOH = NaCI

Conclusion:
The results from using Universal Indicator and the pH Pen were varied depending on the substance. Sometimes it gave you an accurate answer but sometimes you were left confused. For example when testing the Citric Acid with Universal Indicator it went Yellow/Orange and then when tested with the pH pen it tested to be 6.3, this shows that both tests result in Citric Acid being a weak acid. But when testing sugar with Universal Indicator it went Blue/Green and then when tested with the pH pen it tested to be 6.2. This shows that the Universal Indicator indicates the sugar to be a weak base but the pH Pen result showed the Sugar to be a weak acid.
The pH pen is more useful when testing a coloured solution because you might not be able to see the change in colour all the time. For example is orange juice is a orange solution, if Orange Juice is tested with the Universal Indicator and the solution is orange you may not be able to see it accurately, or the colour may mix with the solution causing a wrong colour to form.
